Forest fires continue to ravage Gironde on Sunday, July 26, 2026, with more than 42,000 hectares destroyed and 220,000 people evacuated since Wednesday. The situation remains very unfavorable in several southwestern departments.
The Gironde prefecture announced that 240 homes have been destroyed in total and that nine firefighters were injured on Sunday, bringing the total to 84 injured since the start of the fires. No casualties among the population have been reported.
Emmanuel Macron will preside over an interministerial crisis cell on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Interior Ministry. Two meetings are also planned with economic actors to examine the consequences for tourism, energy and insurance.
Fine particle pollution alert thresholds have been exceeded in the departments of Gironde, Landes, Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne due to smoke plumes. Rail traffic remains interrupted south of Bordeaux.
In some areas such as Biscarrosse and communes in the Var, residents were allowed to return home on Sunday evening, while evacuations remain in force elsewhere until the fire is contained.
