Accident commission starts preliminary study on SSAB cases

The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority has launched a preliminary study into disease cases at SSAB in Luleå. More than 30 cases have been reported since the start of the year at the construction site.

The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority is examining the disease cases at the SSAB construction site in Luleå. Lead investigator Kristina Börjevik Kovaniemi told Dagens Nyheter that the commission is speaking with the parties involved to form a picture of the events.

– We are trying to find out what has happened and assess whether it falls within our area of investigation. We have no formal investigation, I want to be very clear about that, she said.

More than 30 disease cases have occurred since the start of the year. Workers have sought care for symptoms including nosebleeds, dizziness and headaches. Work was halted on 3 April but resumed earlier this week at locations with no reported cases.

SSAB assesses that exposure to fine dust particles is the primary factor behind the symptoms. The Accident Investigation Authority was on site in Luleå for two days to gather information. A decision on a full investigation will be made only after the preliminary study is complete.
