The Civil Aeronautics Authority announced that the temporary closure of Popayán's Guillermo León Valencia Airport will continue due to volcanic ash from Puracé.
The measure was taken to ensure the safety of air operations in the country's southwest. The decision responds to the risk that ash particles pose to aircraft engines. Aerocivil identified effects on five commercial routes and on approach and departure procedures. This creates a partial impact on flights originating or destined for Cali, Puerto Asís and Florencia, as well as connections in Nariño, Cauca and Valle del Cauca. According to the Washington Volcanic Ash Advisory Center and the Colombian Volcanological Observatory, the affected area includes Popayán and nearby zones. The phenomenon occurs intermittently. Air traffic control teams maintain permanent monitoring. The authority recommended that travelers contact their airlines regarding possible delays or cancellations.
