Apple develops route sharing to enable Tesla CarPlay

A new report indicates Apple is advancing CarPlay features that could finally allow Tesla vehicles to support the system. The development centers on route sharing capabilities introduced in recent iOS updates.

The report from 9to5Mac highlights Route Sharing as the key addition in iOS 26.4, released in March. This feature lets navigation apps share routing data directly with a vehicle, addressing previous compatibility barriers for Tesla.

Tesla has maintained its own in-house interface while owners have requested CarPlay for better app integration and navigation options. Bloomberg reported in February that Tesla explored the addition but faced app compatibility and adoption challenges.

The potential integration could arrive with Tesla's summer or fall 2026 software updates. Tesla has prioritized its Full Self-Driving development over third-party systems in recent years.
