The Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana authorized over a thousand auxiliary and PBI police to issue traffic fines in 13 boroughs starting June 23.

The measure aims to strengthen compliance with the Reglamento de Tránsito in Mexico City. Selected officers received theoretical and practical training through the Universidad de la Policía with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety.

In total 717 officers can issue tickets using portable electronic devices and 570 using other technological systems. Each wears a bracelet with a QR code to verify identity.

The boroughs included are Álvaro Obregón, Azcapotzalco, Benito Juárez, Coyoacán, Cuajimalpa, Cuauhtémoc, Iztacalco, Iztapalapa, Magdalena Contreras, Miguel Hidalgo, Milpa Alta, Tlalpan and Xochimilco. In Xochimilco Sector 73 operates under the call sign Excalibur and in Iztapalapa Sector 56 under the call sign Cobra.
