Bambang Pamungkas discusses pure strikers and injury recovery at ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 Trophy Tour

Indonesian football legend Bambang Pamungkas discussed the changing role of pure strikers in modern football and revealed his recovery from a broken leg ahead of the 2002 AFF Cup while attending the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 Trophy Tour in Jakarta.

The event took place at Kota Kasablanka, South Jakarta, on Saturday, 25 July 2026. Bambang Pamungkas, affectionately known as Bepe, explained that in his era alongside Cristian Gonzales, many teams deployed two strikers focused as finishers inside the penalty box.

He noted that football now requires a single forward to create space, press opponents, build attacks, and contribute defensively. "Memang sepak bola terus berkembang. Di era saya dan Cristian Gonzales, sistem permainannya berbeda," Bambang said.

Bambang also recalled suffering a broken leg while playing for Persija against Arema in March before the 2002 AFF Cup. National team doctors had predicted a 10-month recovery, yet he returned in eight months through strict rehabilitation and went on to become the tournament's top scorer.

Bepe expressed confidence that Indonesia's player regeneration will continue producing quality strikers despite tactical shifts.
