Botswana concludes 2026 national chess team selection finals

The Botswana Chess Federation has wrapped up its 2026 National Team Selection Finals, selecting players for the Open and Women's sections through a rigorous multi-phase tournament. Hosted at Yarona Country Lodge, the event featured a round-robin format emphasizing endurance and strategic play. The selected teams will represent Botswana at the Chess Olympiad 2026 in Uzbekistan.

The tournament, aligned with standards from the African Chess Confederation and FIDE, brought together Botswana's top players in a demanding selection process. In the Open Section, Mothudi Arnold Mogotsi won the event with a composed performance, marking his return to the top of Botswana chess. He is joined by Sebetlela Gaasite, CM Thuto Mpene, and CM Thuso Mosutha, who showed consistency throughout. IM Providence Oatlhotse, the country's highest-rated player, joins automatically, providing international experience and leadership.

In the Women's Section, WIM Onkemetse Mendu Francis secured qualification with a strong showing of class and consistency. She will team up with WCM Maya Otimile, WCM Amolemo Atlang Mosweu, and WCM Laone Phoebe Moshoboro, whose selections highlight the growth of women's chess in Botswana. WFM Natalie Banda, the top-rated female player, completes the squad with her experience.
