The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (CAMe) declared Phase 1 Environmental Contingency on Saturday, April 25, in Mexico City and Mexico State due to high ozone levels from a heat wave. Expanded vehicle restrictions apply today, Sunday, April 26, under the Double Hoy No Circula program from 5:00 to 22:00. Temperatures in CDMX will reach 30 to 32 degrees Celsius.
CAMe activated Phase 1 contingency at 14:00 on Saturday after recording 163 ppb of ozone in Naucalpan, Mexico State. This climatic 'cocktail,' with continuous solar radiation and a high-pressure system, prevents air circulation and accumulates pollutants in the Valley of Mexico.
For today Sunday, Double Hoy No Circula restricts private vehicles with verification hologram 2; hologram 1 with even digits (2, 4, 6, 8, 0); hologram 0 and 00 with yellow sticker ending in 5 or 6. It also applies to vehicles without hologram, taxis per rules, 50% of LP gas delivery units with even plates lacking special valve, and freight from 6:00 to 10:00, with exceptions.
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) and CDMX Civil Protection forecast a heat wave from April 25 to 30, affecting 17 states with temperatures up to 45°C in some. In CDMX, maxima of 30-32°C are expected, very hot conditions, partly cloudy skies, high UV index, and possible dust devils.
Authorities recommend avoiding prolonged sun exposure, using sunscreen, drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored light clothing, hats, and caring for pets to prevent dehydration and heat strokes.
