Chennai Corporation to impose ₹25,000 fine on bulk waste violators

The Greater Chennai Corporation plans to raise fines for bulk waste generators violating Solid Waste Management Rules to ₹25,000 from the current ₹5,000, with enforcement expected in a few months.

Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran has directed officials to identify all bulk waste generators ahead of the stricter measures. Over 43 percent of the 3,204 identified generators, including apartments and hospitals, have yet to register on the centralised portal.

All bulk waste generators must register on both GCC and Central Pollution Control Board portals by July 20. They are required to segregate waste, process biodegradable material on site, and submit quarterly reports.

In June, the Corporation collected ₹5.95 lakh in penalties from 120 violators. Supreme Court directions also call for special monitoring cells that may disconnect utilities for non-compliance.
