The Ministry of Mines and Energy presented a strategy with 50 actions to strengthen the energy system ahead of the El Niño phenomenon expected in the second half of 2026.
The national government activated the roadmap during a session of the Advisory Commission for Coordination and Monitoring of the Energy Situation. The plan involves entities such as Upme, Creg, XM and Ecopetrol to monitor electricity demand and natural gas supply.
Minister Edwin Palma said the country seeks to anticipate possible impacts. “We are acting from now. The country cannot wait for the emergency to arrive to make decisions,” he said.
The Ideam confirmed with scientific certainty that El Niño will be more intense than in 2024, with over 90% probability for the second half of the year. Company Celsia is preparing with 70% contract coverage and reservoirs at 73% capacity.
