Crosby sets Penguins points record in 5-1 win over Canucks

Sidney Crosby scored a goal to pass Mario Lemieux for the Pittsburgh Penguins' all-time points record during a 5-1 victory against the Vancouver Canucks at PPG Paints Arena on October 21, 2025. The 38-year-old captain reached 1,896 points in Penguins history, seventh all-time in the NHL. Pittsburgh rallied from an early deficit to win their third straight game.

The Penguins improved to 5-2-0 with the win, while the Canucks fell to 4-3-0 after a three-game winning streak. Conor Garland opened scoring for Vancouver at 1:18 of the first period, carrying the puck to the right face-off circle for a slap shot that beat Arturs Silovs for a 1-0 lead on the game's first shot on goal.

Connor Dewar tied it at 1-1 at 11:39, deflecting a point shot from Parker Wotherspoon. In the second period, Tommy Novak gave Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead on a power play at 14:21 with a wrist shot from the right circle. Crosby then set the franchise record at 16:18, collecting a loose puck in the right circle for a wrist shot in the high slot to make it 3-1. He reached 1,896 points (700 goals, 1,196 assists) in 1,539 games, surpassing Lemieux's 1,895 points in 1,022 games.

"Took me, probably, 500 more games," Crosby said. "Been here for a long time and been fortunate to play with some great players. That’s how I look at it."

Anthony Mantha extended the lead to 4-1 at 17:29, tapping in a rebound from Evgeni Malkin's shot while holding off Max Sasson. Justin Brazeau added the final goal on a power-play wrist shot at 5:56 of the third period.

Kris Letang recorded two assists, including the secondary on Brazeau's goal to reach 600 assists and become the 20th defenseman in NHL history with that mark. "From the beginning, I always said to people, I didn't think I would get here," Letang said. "It's just pretty surreal for me to get to that point."

Brazeau finished with a goal and two assists, while Mantha had a goal and an assist. Silovs made 23 saves in facing his former team for the first time after being traded from Vancouver on July 13. Garland's goal was the lone score for the Canucks, with Kevin Lankinen stopping 21 shots.

Vancouver coach Adam Foote noted an early edge that faded: "We could’ve been up 3, 4-nothing in the first 10 minutes, but it didn’t happen... A lot of good things early. We looked like we just ran out of a little bit of gas."

Forward Elias Pettersson added: "I liked our start. I think we came out good... Second period, I think we gave them too much. They got some life. I thought we were controlling the game good, but we let it slip."

Notes: Crosby became the 17th player in NHL history with at least 700 combined goals in regular season and playoffs. Canucks forwards Filip Chytil, Teddy Blueger and Jonathan Lekkerimaki sat out with undisclosed injuries from their prior 4-3 win at Washington.
