Daniel Castellani, former Argentine national volleyball player and coach, died this Thursday at age 65 after a long illness.
The Argentine Volleyball Federation confirmed Castellani's death on Thursday, June 25. “With deep sorrow the Argentine Volleyball Federation regrets to announce the passing of Daniel Castellani this Thursday June 25 after a long battle against a serious illness,” the organization stated in a release.
As a player, Castellani was part of the team that won bronze at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and finished third at the 1982 World Cup. He later coached the men's national team to gold at the 1995 Pan American Games and led the women's team Las Panteras.
In 2023 he disclosed a cancer diagnosis shortly after taking charge of Las Panteras. The federation noted that he “marked the history of modern volleyball as an undisputed leader on and off the court.”
