Double sky phenomena over Sweden on Saturday

On Saturday evening and into the night toward Sunday, Swedes witnessed both the northern lights and Comet Lemmon across various parts of the country. The phenomena were visible unusually far south, including in Uppsala, Stockholm, and Småland. Hobby photographer Marie Larsson captured both on camera outside Markaryd.

The northern lights, typically most prominent in northern Sweden, appeared unusually far south this time. The green glow illuminated the sky in Uppsala, Stockholm, and Norrtälje. Even in Småland, just outside Markaryd, the phenomenon was visible.

Hobby photographer Marie Larsson captured the northern lights in several photos. She also photographed Comet Lemmon, discovered in January this year according to National Geographic. The comet will soon leave the solar system and won't return for over a thousand years.

For Larsson, sky phenomena are a major fascination. “I am and have always been interested in the sky – there is so much to discover there. It is a challenge to find and photograph comets, but it is part of the hunt,” she wrote in a text message.

The event gave many the opportunity to enjoy rare natural spectacles, even though the northern lights rarely reach so far south.
