Ethiopia advances digital finance as Telebirr reaches 58 million users

Ethiopia has positioned digital money transfers as a key pillar for universal prosperity, with the Telebirr app reaching 58 million users in three years.

Addis Ababa officials described the shift as supported by growth in telecom users to 87.9 million. This expansion enabled 99.8 percent public access to digital payment systems.

Telebirr now serves over 58.6 million customers and has processed more than 6.88 trillion birr in transfers. The app also offers credit services to strengthen financial inclusion.

The Fayda ID and Digital 2030 strategy support modern oversight that helps block illegal transfers. These tools provide a stable financial base for agriculture, construction and tourism sectors.
