Ethiopia Defense University Inaugurates Advanced Research Laboratory

Ethiopia's Defense University in Addis Ababa has inaugurated an advanced central research laboratory. Defense Minister Aisha Mohammed said the center will accelerate the army's modernization. The facility was built through cooperation with the United Arab Emirates.

Ethiopia's Defense University inaugurated the advanced central research laboratory on July 19, 2018, on a 20,850 square meter site in Addis Ababa. The facility houses seven specialized labs focused on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, 3D printing and prototyping, communication engineering, automation, electric power, and nursing.

Defense Minister Aisha Mohammed (Engineer) stated at the event that the laboratory marks a major step in opening a new chapter for education, science, and institutional capacity. She added that it will promote technology transfer and build indigenous technological capabilities.

The historical friendship between Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates advanced to institutional modernization under a May 2023 agreement. The university currently serves over 2,000 students and more than 400 scholars.
