A 5-year-old named Kaizer was struck by a stray bullet Tuesday evening while riding his bicycle near his west side Detroit home but has been released from the hospital and is expected to recover.
The incident occurred on Lindsay Street near Trojan Avenue, next to Fargo-Oakfield Park. Kaizer's father said the boy was riding near the driveway when gunfire erupted and he fell to the ground.
"He was screaming, 'A firecracker hit me,'" the father recalled. He added that he saw blood on his son's arm and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where Kaizer was treated and released Wednesday afternoon.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said investigators believe the shooter was a masked teenager. A person of interest matching that description was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon, though police are still searching for at least one additional suspect.
Kaizer's father described his son's survival as a miracle. "I know God was watching over him," he said. "I just can't believe somebody would bring a gun to a park where innocent children are playing." The investigation remains ongoing.
