Google rolls out Nano Banana AI to search, Photos, and NotebookLM

Google is expanding its Nano Banana AI image-editing model to more platforms after over 5 billion edits. The tool, which allows image modifications via prompts, is now available in Search and NotebookLM, with Google Photos to follow soon. This upgrade aims to enhance conversational editing across Google's ecosystem.

Google began experimenting with conversational image editing earlier this year in its dev-focused AI studio. Over the summer, the company rolled out the Nano Banana image-editing model in Gemini 2.5 Flash, enabling users to modify images with simple prompts.

Nano Banana is now integrating into Google Search via Lens and AI Mode. In the Lens app for iOS and Android, users can snap a photo and tap a "Create" button featuring a banana icon to enter editing prompts. Results appear in the Google app, with options for follow-up edits in AI Mode's conversational interface. Alternatively, in AI Mode, users can select the "Create image" tool to generate and refine images through ongoing prompts.

For NotebookLM, which added a video overview feature several months ago, Nano Banana introduces new video styles such as whiteboard, anime, and retro print, alongside the original "Classic" option. Videos now include a "Brief" format in addition to "Explainer," with prompts to guide content, though outcomes remain generative and not guaranteed.

The model is described by Google as a "major upgrade" over its previous image-editing tool. Conversational editing arrived in Google Photos last month, but Nano Banana will replace it in the coming weeks, promising smoother experiences. No firm timeline for Photos has been set, but the rollout follows extensive testing that impressed users over the summer.
