Gränbyskolan is the first in Uppsala to test SAO jobs where lower secondary students work two hours a week as part of their schooling. Since March about one hundred eighth-graders have worked at some fifty employers.
Students Mabel Berhet and Phompiriya Manpain have worked Tuesdays from 14.00 to 16.00 at Uppsala municipality’s Education and Job Centre in Boländerna. Mabel has been at the caretaking unit and Phompiriya at the café.
Mabel describes filling paper in the copier and sorting recycling. She also joins the van to collect goods for the second-hand store Återbruket. Phompiriya fetches goods, wipes tables and tries working the cash register.
High school attendance is required to keep the job. Mabel says the SAO incentive makes her double-check cancelled lessons. Both students want more schools to offer the model.
Today is their final workday before summer break. Supervisors serve cake and they return to the jobs when the autumn term starts.
