GTA Wiki leaves Fandom for independent site

The GTA Wiki, the largest community-driven resource for the Grand Theft Auto series, has moved from the Fandom platform to its own site at gta.wiki. Editors cited aggressive ads, intrusive videos, and tightening censorship policies as key reasons for the departure. The move occurred less than eight months before GTA 6's planned November launch.

Over the weekend before March 16, 2026, GTA Wiki editors polled users and editors on leaving Fandom. The vote was nearly unanimous in favor of creating an independent site free from Fandom's rules and ads. On March 16, the new site launched at gta.wiki, importing all over 20,000 articles without pop-up ads, obtrusive videos, or content restrictions that previously affected in-game images and audio clips of character quotes due to Fandom's Communication Creation Policy (CC Policy). The iconic middle-finger cursor was also removed under Fandom's customization limits, editors noted in a blog post announcing the poll results and reasons for leaving. Ads were particularly intrusive for over 60% of visitors who are logged-out mobile users, while top videos since 2017 often featured inaccurate information beyond editors' control. The GTA Wiki Twitter account stated: “Today, we are happy to announce that GTA Wiki has moved from Fandom to gta.wiki! This move allows the GTA Wiki to be free from Fandom's increasingly strict policies, meaning less content censorship, significantly fewer ads, an improved front page, and a better overall mobile experience!” This follows a trend: Minecraft and Balatro wikis left in 2025, League of Legends in October 2024, and Runescape via Weird Gloop since 2018. Fears grew after Fandom's February 2026 pro-AI CEO appointment. A Fandom spokesperson responded: “While we’re always disappointed when admins choose to leave, the Grand Theft Auto wiki remains active for the more than 9 million fans who visit each month. We’ll continue to grow and manage the community with new creators and those who choose to remain.”
