Guatemalan army confronts criminals from Mexico at border; soldier injured

The Guatemalan Army clashed with suspected illegal armed groups that entered from Mexico at the Chiapas border, injuring one soldier. The incident took place in the departments of Huehuetenango and San Marcos, where the criminals fired on local communities. Guatemalan authorities seized weapons, tactical gear, and drones in the operation.

Guatemala's Ministry of National Defense reported on Monday the incursion of illegal armed groups into its territory from the Chiapas border with Mexico. The clash occurred during routine patrols near the Agua Zarca community in Huehuetenango, as soldiers approached the incursion area.

A military spokesperson confirmed in a video message that the groups fired on communities in Huehuetenango and San Marcos. In the response, an officer was wounded in a lower limb but is out of danger. Guatemalan forces bolstered security in the region and coordinate with Mexico's Secretariat of National Defense.

The operation yielded weapons of various calibers, explosives, accessories, surveillance drones, and vehicles, all turned over to authorities. The Guatemalan Army reaffirms its commitment to national sovereignty and population protection through ongoing border operations.

This event underscores tensions in the border area, where patrols aim to prevent incursions threatening community safety.
