Half-Life Legacy serves as an enhanced fan modification of Valve's original Half-Life shooter, described by its creators as the "ultimate restoration for the legendary title." The mod introduces features such as full controller support, achievements, speedrunning tools, dynamic weapon lighting, Steam Workshop integration, and Rich Presence for Steam and Discord.
The release is scheduled for December 12, 2025, and will be available on Steam. However, the team has faced significant hurdles in providing native Linux support. As stated in their announcement: "We also have important news to share regarding the Linux version of the game. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have been unable to port Half-Life Legacy to Linux, unlike Cross Product."
Linux has been a key target platform since late 2020, primarily to ensure compatibility with the Steam Deck. Despite extensive efforts, a "very strange issue" that the developers have spent many hours diagnosing prevents a native release. The mod has been successfully tested using Proton on Linux Mint and SteamOS on the Steam Deck, with no major problems reported. This compatibility layer, part of Steam Play, allows Linux users to run the game for now.
The developers plan to implement native Linux support when possible, acknowledging the challenge: "We will add native Linux support as soon as we can but this issue is not easy to solve." They have invited technically skilled individuals to assist via Discord or comments, warning of "vague debugger errors and complicated issues."
The mod supports platforms via Proton and Wine, emphasizing its accessibility despite the Linux setback.
