Hamburger SV earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Bundesliga leaders FC Bayern München. In the sold-out Volksparkstadion, the hosts delivered a strong performance and kept pace with the record champions. It was HSV's first draw against Bayern since 2014.
On matchday 20 of the Bundesliga, promoted Hamburger SV faced FC Bayern München and put on an impressive display. Unlike the 0-5 reverse fixture, the hosts were equals this time. The game at the 57,000-capacity Volksparkstadion ended 2:2 (1:1).
HSV created early chances: Luka Vuskovic narrowly missed with a header in the 6th minute. In the 34th, Joshua Kimmich conceded a penalty, which Fabio Vieira converted to 1-0 after a trick with Albert Sambi Lokonga – Manuel Neuer was helpless. Harry Kane equalized eight minutes later at 1:1, his 22nd goal of the season.
Shortly after the restart, substitute Luis Díaz scored in the 46th for 1:2. But 18-year-old Vuskovic, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, headed the deserved equalizer in the 53rd. Alphonso Davies cleared a HSV shot from Vieira off the line in the 74th.
In stoppage time, a handball by Daniel Elfadli was reviewed but no penalty awarded. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany made seven changes, including resting Jonathan Tah.
"We allowed too many chances. We wanted to win," fumed sporting director Max Eberl. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer saw it positively: "It feels like a loss, but we're not satisfied." Vuskovic enjoyed: "With more luck, we could have scored a third."
Bayern remains top despite a second setback after the 1:2 loss to Augsburg. HSV climbs to 13th but stays in relegation danger, winless in six games. At home, the promoted side is unbeaten in six straight. A first HSV win over Bayern since 2009 eluded them.
