A fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill has burned for more than a week and attracted attention from international outlets BBC and Al Jazeera.
BBC reported that flames have consumed more than 15 hectares of the Jatiwaringin landfill on the outskirts of Jakarta. Thick smoke has blanketed nearby residential areas and prompted the evacuation of hundreds of residents to temporary shelters.
Resident Sarmanah, 45, said the smoke was so thick that she and her family could not see and suffered coughing, colds, and breathing difficulties. They eventually left their home.
Al Jazeera reported firefighting efforts that included helicopter water bombing from the air and crews working to extinguish fires beneath piles of waste. Official data showed 234 residents underwent health checks, with 72 diagnosed with acute respiratory infections.
