Joburg Water has deployed roving and stationary tankers across affected areas in greater Johannesburg as Rand Water carries out infrastructure maintenance that began on Friday.
The maintenance programme, expected to run until Tuesday, has led to low water pressure or outages in parts of Roodepoort, Soweto and Sandton. Joburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said priority is given to schools, hospitals and informal settlements.
Gauteng Health Department spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed contingency measures for Johannesburg hospitals. Most facilities hold enough stored water for two to three days, with direct supply lines from Rand Water and municipal tankers on standby at sites including Chris Hani Baragwanath, Rahima Moosa and Helen Joseph hospitals.
Shabalala urged residents to report issues through councillors, Johannesburg Water or social media. Some residents in the City of Tshwane welcomed the work, noting it should improve water quality for communities.
