Lewis Hamilton received a five-second penalty for exceeding the pit lane speed limit by 0.1 km/h during the Hungarian Grand Prix. The sanction dropped him from fourth to fifth place behind his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. Fans have since debated the consistency of the punishment compared to other incidents in the race.
Hamilton was clocked at 80.1 km/h while making his third pit stop under a virtual safety car. He had been battling Kimi Antonelli for a podium position at the time.
The penalty came after Carlos Sainz was also given five seconds for contact with Oscar Piastri. Piastri, who led the race earlier, retired later due to a gearbox failure.
Many fans agreed the speeding warranted a penalty but questioned why Sainz received the same punishment for the collision. One Reddit user wrote that if there was no penalty everyone would speed in the pit lane while another called for a harsher sanction against Sainz.
Hamilton himself noted after the race that the team should not have pitted him under the virtual safety car.
