Anna Björn tried to halt grass mowing on Porsön where a threatened great curlew was nesting but the eggs were crushed anyway. She has now reported Luleå municipality to police for the incident that occurred earlier this week.
Anna Björn witnessed a pair of great curlews trying to scare away the mower driver on Porsön. Only crushed eggs remained after her alarm failed to stop the mowing. The great curlew is red-listed as critically endangered in Sweden. The population has declined sharply since the 1970s and many nests are destroyed by machinery in spring. Luleå municipality leases the area to Luleå Discgolf Association and mowed the meadow to enable activities. Section chief Sandra Ottosson called the event highly unfortunate and cited a misunderstanding as the cause. Destroying nests can constitute a species protection offence. The municipality states routines will be reviewed and the area inspected before future mowing.
