The Malawian High Commission in South Africa has appealed to its nationals seeking voluntary repatriation not to go to the old Durban Drive-In site, which has become overwhelmed after being decommissioned earlier this week.
Hundreds of Malawian nationals remain outside the site. Malawian consular official Adam Ali said additional support is needed to transport about 600 men still on the ground.
“The Gift of the Givers, which is on the ground now and which has given us two buses to take the ladies, and the good of it they are going straight to Malawi not to Musina and I’m still appealing to those who want to assist to come on board because I got almost, I can say 600 men who are still on the ground,” Ali said.
Gift of the Givers community liaison officer Bilall Jeewa said the organisation arranged two buses for women and children to travel directly to Malawi and would assist more if funding and resources allow. More than 700 undocumented foreign nationals, mainly from Malawi, have gathered at the site.
