Marlins clear roster spots by losing two players on waivers

The Miami Marlins made several transactions on Wednesday, clearing seven spots on their 40-man roster. Right-hander George Soriano was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles, while infielder-outfielder Troy Johnston was picked up by the Colorado Rockies.

Miami Marlins parted ways with several players in a series of moves aimed at reshaping their 40-man roster. The team outrighted five players to Triple-A Jacksonville and reinstated two from the injured list.

Key transactions included right-hander George Soriano, 26, being claimed by the Orioles. Soriano, signed by the Marlins in 2015 from the Dominican Republic, appeared in 72 games (one start) from 2023-25, posting a 5.95 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with three saves. He had no minor league options remaining.

Infielder-outfielder Troy Johnston, 28, was claimed by the Rockies after his major league debut on July 29. Johnston recorded a .751 OPS in 121 plate appearances over 44 games, playing corner outfield and first base. As the organization's 2023 Minor League Player of the Year, he went unprotected in the Rule 5 Draft but was not selected. The Marlins' outfield is set with left-handed hitters Kyle Stowers, Jakob Marsee, Griffin Conine and Victor Mesa Jr., while first base remains a weak spot with the fourth-lowest OPS (.663) in MLB for 2025.

Right-hander Jesus Tinoco, 30, was reinstated from the 60-day injured list after undergoing right elbow UCL hybrid reconstruction and flexor tendon repair in early September, sidelining him for 2026. He had a 2.03 ERA with three saves in 21 games in 2024, but struggled to a 5.12 ERA with four saves in 2025.

Tyler Zuber, also 30, returned from the 60-day IL after a right lat strain on Aug. 30. Claimed from the Mets on July 9, he made nine appearances, allowing 13 earned runs in 10 innings.

Valente Bellozo, 25, acquired from the Astros in April 2024, was outrighted after a 4.65 ERA in 32 games (six starts) in 2025, up from 3.67 in 13 starts in 2024. His average four-seam velocity was 90.8 mph.

Freddy Tarnok, 26, pitched in five games after his contract was selected on June 15, earning one save with two runs allowed on one hit, 10 strikeouts and four walks in 7 1/3 innings.

Catcher Brian Navarreto, turning 31 on Dec. 29, returned to the majors on Sept. 5 and hit his first career homer but was outrighted. The Marlins have rookies Agustín Ramírez and Liam Hicks, plus prospect Joe Mack to protect ahead of the Rule 5 Draft.
