Modo Hockey has appointed Mikael Karlberg as its new head coach ahead of the next season. The multi-year contract runs through the end of the 2028/29 campaign. Karlberg brings extensive experience from Leksand and a recent stint at Färjestad BK.
Mikael Karlberg steps into the role as Modo's head coach for the first time officially on senior level, following his move from an assistant position at Färjestad BK this season. He spent 27 years with Leksand as both player and leader before heading to Karlstad for the 2025/26 season. Alongside sport chief Henrik Gradin and the rest of the staff, which is still being finalized, Karlberg aims to build on Modo's strengths heading forward. The announcement came via the club's website, where Karlberg reflected on his past roles. 'The last years in Leksand I was not head coach on paper but was it unofficially. Challe Berglund was it outwardly but I had largely the head coach assignment,' he said, adding with a laugh that it spared him some media attention. Looking ahead, Karlberg plans to assess what has worked for Modo by consulting players and staff. 'First and foremost, one wants to look at what has worked and what Modo's strengths have been... There is an idea to play with the puck closer to each other and help each other better on the ice,' he told the club's site.
