Mohamsson vows to vote against Kristersson if SD joins government

Liberal leader Simona Mohamsson declared in SVT's Agenda that her party will vote against Ulf Kristersson as prime minister if the Sweden Democrats receive ministerial posts after the next election. The decision is backed by the party's board from October. She is prepared to push the issue to new elections but hopes for a resolution via a new Tidö agreement.

In Sunday's episode of SVT's Agenda, Simona Mohamsson, leader of the Liberals, confirmed her party's stance against cooperating with the Sweden Democrats on government formation. The Liberals' party board unanimously decided in early October not to support a government where the SD holds ministerial posts. After the host repeated the question four times, Mohamsson answered directly: "Yes," regarding whether the party will vote against Ulf Kristersson (M) as prime minister in parliament.

Mohamsson emphasized the importance of the current cooperation: "For our mandates, we require continuing the collaboration we have today, which makes Sweden richer, safer, and freer." She advocates for a new Tidö agreement after the 2026 election, but without the SD in government. In a DN op-ed a few weeks ago, she wrote: "They do not behave, they are not a bourgeois party, and they will not be accepted by voters wanting to join our bloc."

The Sweden Democrats' leader Jimmie Åkesson has called the Liberals' position "incomprehensible." Mohamsson is prepared to push the demand through parliamentary votes all the way to new elections: "Yes, absolutely," but added: "My starting point is that this will be resolved, just as we have succeeded in resolving it before."

Beyond the government issue, the Liberals announced last week a proposal for a profit ban in free schools. Limited companies should be phased out, with schools continuing as foundations without profit requirements. "We cannot have a free school system with such clear demands for profits," Mohamsson said. She rejects cooperation with the red-greens and hopes for bourgeois support: "I am hopeful that more parties in the bourgeoisie will see the problems in the free school system too."
