Health Minister Mónica García announced on Saturday her intention to run in Más Madrid's primaries to become the candidate for Madrid region's presidency against Isabel Díaz Ayuso. García, who ran in 2023, made the announcement at an event in San Blas-Canillejas. She must go through the party's internal process, where she might face figures like Emilio Delgado.
Health Minister Mónica García confirmed on Saturday in Madrid's San Blas-Canillejas neighborhood her decision to run in Más Madrid's primaries ahead of the 2027 regional elections. "I want to be the president of the Community of Madrid. I want to fight against Ayuso and make that Goliath who has done us so much harm leave," García stated during the third edition of the 'La madrileña' party in Parque Paraíso.
García, who in 2023 led Más Madrid as the main opposition force in the Madrid Assembly ahead of the PSOE, moved to the national government that year as minister appointed by Pedro Sánchez. From her post, she has repeatedly criticized the Community's health model under Ayuso and her counselor Fátima Matute on issues like abortion, conscientious objectors, and Torrejón Hospital.
The event also featured Manuela Bergerot, Rita Maestre, and Emilio Delgado, the latter a potential primary rival. Yolanda Díaz, deputy prime minister and Sumar colleague, backed García: she will send Ayuso to the opposition and build a Community of hope, social justice, and rights.
García's expected decision, following recent rumors, comes one year before the elections and could affect the left-wing space beyond Madrid after Díaz ruled herself out for national leadership bids.
