MUI initiates Asia-Pacific endowment fund for Gaza reconstruction

Indonesia's Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) plans to establish an Asia-Pacific Endowment Fund for Palestine following the Asia Pacific Dialogue for Palestine scheduled for November 7–8, 2025, in Jakarta. The initiative aims to provide sustainable funding for Gaza's reconstruction. Prof Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim highlighted Indonesia's experience in managing endowment funds as a foundation for regional collaboration.

Indonesia's Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) will host the Asia Pacific Dialogue for Palestine on November 7–8, 2025, at the MPR/DPR RI Complex in Senayan, Jakarta. The event is organized in collaboration with the Badan Kerja Sama Antar Parlemen (BKSAP) of DPR RI and the Global Coalition for Al-Quds and Palestine (GCAP). As a follow-up, MUI plans to establish the Asia-Pacific Endowment Fund to support the Palestinian struggle and reconstruction, particularly in Gaza.

Prof Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, Chair of MUI's Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Division, explained that the idea stems from awareness among Asia-Pacific countries and philanthropic institutions to contribute sustainably. "We in Indonesia already have sufficient experience in managing endowment funds, although still smaller compared to America or Egypt. But this idea of collaboration among Asia-Pacific philanthropic institutions offers great possibilities," he said during a press conference at MUI's Central Office in Jakarta on Thursday (October 30, 2025).

The endowment fund's formation will be a key agenda in the informal meeting of dialogue participants. Philanthropic institutions from various countries will formulate the management structure, operational mechanisms, and the possibility of a joint office. "If there is agreement in the informal meeting later, the process of forming the endowment fund could start soon. There is a possibility of an initial outline on its governance and management," Prof Sudarnoto added.

This initiative underscores the need for ongoing support for Palestine, ensuring Gaza's reconstruction remains a priority amid global dynamics.
