Netflix's new eight-episode series 'Run Away,' adapted from Harlan Coben's novel, follows a father's desperate search for his missing daughter amid shocking twists and violence. Starring James Nesbitt and Minnie Driver, the U.K.-set thriller explores hidden family secrets. It premieres on January 1, 2025.
'Run Away' continues Netflix's tradition of adapting Harlan Coben mysteries, with Danny Brocklehurst—known for 2024's 'Fool Me Once'—handling the adaptation. The series centers on Simon Greene, a financier played by James Nesbitt, whose seemingly perfect life unravels when his eldest daughter, Paige (Ellie de Lange), vanishes after developing a drug dependency in college.
Simon, married to pediatrician Ingrid (Minnie Driver), refuses to abandon Paige despite her insistence that their daughter must hit rock bottom. After six months without contact, Simon locates her in a park and confronts her volatile boyfriend, Aaron Corval (Thomas Flynn), leading to a violent altercation witnessed by bystanders. Soon after, Aaron is found dead, making Simon the prime suspect for detectives Isaac Fagbenle (Alfred Enoch) and Ruby Todd (Amy Gledhill).
To clear his name and find Paige, Simon partners with private investigator Elena Ravenscroft (Ruth Jones), who links Paige's case to another disappearance. Like Coben's previous Netflix series such as 'Missing You' and 'The Stranger,' 'Run Away' weaves a complex tapestry of riddles, revelations, and lies, often bordering on the preposterous but sustained by strong pacing and a talented cast including Adrian Greensmith as Sam and Ellie Henry as Anya.
The narrative delves into themes of buried traumas and the secrets people keep from loved ones, showing how exposure can reshape relationships. Amid shootouts, flashbacks, and constant plot shifts, the show builds an intricate web of interconnected characters and events, reminding viewers that uncovering truths can be unsettling.
Executive produced by Coben, Nicola Shindler, Richard Fee, and Brocklehurst, with Guy Hescott as series producer, 'Run Away' maintains the author's signature blend of entertainment and intensity.
