LKAB has received a new environmental permit for its operations in Malmberget. The permit covers both existing mining activities and plans for a demonstration plant producing iron sponge as part of the HYBRIT project.
The permit was issued on Monday by the Land and Environment Court. The application was submitted in May 2023 and final hearings took place during the spring.
Johan Menckel, president and CEO of LKAB, said the ruling provides conditions to continue operations. He stressed that the permit matters both for growth and for the ability to maintain mining at all.
The permit includes conditions on uranium emissions to the Lina River as well as requirements for consultations with Sami villages and limits on seismic activity. An investment decision for the plant is still pending.
