Police Rescue 10 Held Amid Cross River-Benue Communal Tension

Police rescued 10 people detained in Ijegwu community in Cross River State on Sunday amid renewed tensions with neighbouring communities in Benue State.

The rescue followed violence that erupted after two people were killed in Uware Council Ward in Benue State. The clash was linked to the death of a man who was beaten after allegedly trying to steal a goat on June 26.

DSP Collins Ekuogu, the Area Commander for Ogoja, handed the rescued persons to Konshisha Local Government Area Chairman Mr. Moses Terfa. The handover took place in the presence of Yala Local Government Area Chairman Dr. Fred Okem and Konshisha Divisional Police Officer CSP Torinya Joe.

Dr. Okem described the violence as unfortunate and noted the longstanding ties between the two states. He urged both communities to maintain peace. Mr. Terfa called for reconciliation and highlighted the shared economic links across the border.
