Rafael Devers objected to being replaced by a pinch runner during the San Francisco Giants' 2-1 loss to the Miami Marlins on Sunday at loanDepot park.
Devers drew a six-pitch walk to lead off the top of the ninth inning with the Giants trailing by one run. Manager Tony Vitello then sent Jonah Cox in as a pinch runner to increase the team's chances of scoring the tying run with added speed.
Devers signaled to the dugout that he was healthy enough to stay in the game and run the bases. He shook his finger at Cox and appeared frustrated as the move was completed.
"He was signaling over to us that he's good to run," Vitello said after the game. Vitello noted some prior soreness in Devers' leg but said the decision was driven by strategy in a close contest. He added that the team talks daily and he sees no need for a further discussion with the player.
Cox did not attempt a steal and the Giants ended the game on a double play. Devers finished 0 for 3 with the walk.
