Diego Santilli will formally assume the role of interior minister this Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Casa Rosada's Salón Blanco, before President Javier Milei and the full Cabinet. His appointment was confirmed at the end of October, but his departure from the Chamber of Deputies was delayed due to the ruling party's concerns over losing key influence in the Budget and Finance Committee ahead of the 2026 Budget report. Ultimately, La Libertad Avanza (LLA) secured majority approval with support from PRO and UCR last Tuesday.
Santilli submitted his resignation and will be temporarily replaced by Nelson Marino until December 10, after which Rubén Torres, a libertarian leader from Ezeiza close to Sebastián Pareja, will take the seat. Even before swearing in, Santilli has begun a series of in-person meetings with governors to outline a political roadmap.
On Friday afternoon at the Casa Rosada, he met with Chubut's Ignacio Torres and Catamarca's Raúl Jalil. Discussions focused on ongoing public works, pending transfers, and the final stretch of the legislative year. Cabinet Chief Manuel Adorni also joined, aiming to energize a more active political table.
This week, on Monday, he will meet Córdoba's Martín Llaryora and San Juan's Marcelo Orrego. Official sources say these talks aim to garner support for Milei's 'second-generation' reforms to be sent to Congress during extraordinary sessions from December 10 to 31. The government hopes Santilli's established connections will help stabilize federal dialogue.
