Sharpikeebo pocket Linux computer starts shipping after three-year delay

The ShaRPiKeebo, a compact computer kit designed for Raspberry Pi, is finally set to ship worldwide following a crowdfunding campaign launched over three years ago. Backers can expect deliveries soon after units reach distributor Mouser this week. The device combines a sunlight-readable display, thumb keyboard, and LoRa radio for versatile portable computing.

Developer Sufuroid introduced the ShaRPiKeebo in mid-2022 through a crowdfunding effort on Crowd Supply, promising a pocket-sized kit built around a Raspberry Pi Zero W or Zero 2W. Users must supply their own Raspberry Pi, allowing flexibility in processor choice. The kit features a custom PCB with a 2.7-inch Sharp Memory LCD display at 400 x 240 pixels, which operates in black and white without a backlight for energy efficiency and visibility in sunlight.

A 56-key QMK-compatible thumb keyboard enables direct interaction with the Pi or serves as an external USB keyboard for other devices. Additional controls include dual D-pads for gaming, extra buttons, and four LED indicators. Connectivity extends beyond the Pi's built-in WiFi and Bluetooth with a 433 MHz LoRa transceiver supporting mesh networking for long-range communication.

The device measures 115 x 66 x 20 mm and weighs 100 grams for the board alone. It includes a JST connector for LiPo batteries, plus GPIO, UART, and I2C interfaces. Initially without an enclosure, the project later added a free case for backers.

Delays pushed shipping beyond an April 2024 update citing near-readiness, attributed to personal issues. A recent campaign note confirms units heading to Mouser for global distribution this week. While availability for non-backers remains unclear, the ShaRPiKeebo offers a unique blend of portability and expandability in the Raspberry Pi ecosystem.
