Rescue services were alerted to Arlanda airport on Wednesday evening due to a suspected mercury leak from a cargo plane. The response involved multiple units and chemical divers, but the operation ended shortly after 8 p.m. It turned out to be an old leak from a package in a container, handed over to DHL.
On the evening of Wednesday, October 22, 2025, rescue services were called to Arlanda airport at 7 p.m. due to a suspected mercury leak. According to Alexander Westerberg from the rescue services, it likely involved a cargo plane, but the Sea and Air Rescue Center stated the aircraft had not been in the air.
By 7:30 p.m., Westerberg described the situation as frozen, with multiple units on site awaiting more resources, including chemical divers. "It's a frozen situation. We're awaiting additional resources, including chemical divers. They will enter to get an indication of what kind of leak it is," he said.
The operation concluded shortly after 8 p.m. Elias Koivisto from the rescue services explained: "We've left the scene. It was about a package in a container that traveled with the plane. The package leaked a long time ago." It was not confirmed if the leak contained mercury, and the matter was handed over to DHL. No damages or further risks were reported.
