Team USA's 2026 WBC quarterfinal hopes hinge on Italy-Mexico result

Following an 8-6 upset loss to undefeated Italy on Tuesday, Team USA's advancement from Pool B in the 2026 World Baseball Classic now rests on Italy's final game against Mexico. At 3-1, the Americans need Italy to win or lose by a high margin to avoid complex tiebreakers.

Italy's stunning 8-6 victory over a star-laden Team USA on Tuesday left the U.S. at 3-1 after prior wins over Brazil, Great Britain, and Mexico (5-3). Italy (3-0) faces Mexico (2-1) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET on Tubi.

An Italy win secures them first place at 4-0, with USA as 3-1 runner-up; both advance to quarterfinals. A Mexico win creates a 3-1 three-way tie. Mexico would take first due to fewest runs allowed overall. The second spot goes to the best tiebreaker among USA, Italy, and Mexico from their head-to-head games.

Tiebreakers prioritize: 1) Lowest quotient of (runs allowed / defensive outs) in head-to-heads; 2) Earned runs allowed / outs; 3) Batting average in those games; 4) Drawing of lots.

Current head-to-head quotients favor USA (0.2037) over Mexico (0.2083), with Italy's worse after late U.S. homers. In a nine-inning loss, Italy advances if they allow 4 or fewer runs; USA advances if 5+. Extra innings alter math.

"It’s out of our control," captain Aaron Judge said. "Now we just need a little luck." The roster, including Judge, Bryce Harper, and Bobby Witt Jr., will watch from their Houston hotel. Oddsmakers list USA at +230 to win the tournament.
