Tesla reintroduces Mad Max mode in Full Self-Driving update

Tesla has released a software update for its Full Self-Driving system that reactivates a highly aggressive driving mode known as Mad Max. This mode, described as the fastest and most assertive profile, allows for frequent lane changes and higher speeds. The update comes amid an ongoing federal investigation into Tesla's autonomous driving technology.

Tesla's latest update to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software has brought back a configuration called "Mad Max Mode," which emphasizes aggressive and rapid maneuvers on the road. According to Karan Singh in an article at Not a Tesla App, this is "the fastest and most aggressive FSD profile." In operation, it involves frequently changing lanes as needed to progress quickly.

The mode joins Tesla's existing FSD profiles: Chill, Standard, and Hurry. Reddit users have noted its distinction, particularly how it surpasses the Hurry setting in speed and assertiveness. Simon Alvarez of Teslarati reported that several Tesla drivers shared positive feedback on the feature, with one achieving a maximum speed of 85 miles per hour while using Mad Max mode.

This reintroduction occurs shortly after a federal investigation into Tesla's FSD systems by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), as observed by Karl Furlong in Autoblog. Enabling more assertive driving behaviors could draw further scrutiny, contrasting with efforts to maintain a low profile during the probe. The NHTSA's response to this development remains unclear.
