Tom Selleck supports Blue Bloods spin-off but hesitates on return

Tom Selleck has voiced support for the Blue Bloods spin-off Boston Blue, according to Donnie Wahlberg, though he has not committed to appearing. Wahlberg shared that Selleck was supportive during private talks before the series premiered. Selleck himself indicated reluctance to reprise his role as Frank Reagan.

Donnie Wahlberg, who plays Detective Danny Reagan in both Blue Bloods and its spin-off Boston Blue, revealed he consulted Selleck before joining the new series. In an October 2025 interview with Parade, Wahlberg said, 'Of course, I spoke to Tom the minute I was deciding if this was something I was going to do... he's been very supportive.' He added that while Selleck has not committed to a guest spot, the door remains open for crossovers, such as Danny visiting Frank in New York or Selleck traveling to Boston. Wahlberg noted the team aims to craft material that appeals to Selleck, who bases decisions on the work itself, and they are exploring ways to include other Reagan family members. The original Blue Bloods series ended in December 2024 after 293 episodes, despite strong ratings and cast efforts to continue. Selleck, who portrayed Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, called the cancellation a 'huge disappointment' and praised the show's positive set environment. In a November 2025 Hour Detroit interview, he stated, 'I don't know if I would do Boston Blue. That's another show,' emphasizing his role in preserving Blue Bloods' legacy without extending it indefinitely. Reflecting on the finale, Selleck told TV Insider the adjustment was tough, saying it would take time to process after years of routine. Wahlberg echoed this in Parade, describing the cast as an 'offscreen family' whose end broke hearts. Boston Blue, ordered just two months after Blue Bloods concluded, picked up Danny's story in the same Friday night slot.
