Tommy Fleetwood adds 3-iron for links golf setup

Tommy Fleetwood has added a TaylorMade GAPR Lo 3-iron to his bag this week while retaining his 9-wood for the Genesis Scottish Open at Renaissance Club.

The change allows the Englishman to hit low-trajectory shots off the tee and into greens on the windy coastal layout. TaylorMade Tour rep Adrian Rietveld said the two clubs cover roughly the same distance of 235 to 240 yards but produce different ball flights.

Fleetwood previously made a similar adjustment earlier this year in Miami by inserting a 4-iron between his 9-wood and 5-iron. He has dropped his 56-degree wedge to accommodate the utility iron and plans to keep the setup for next week’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

Other players including Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele have also added utility irons this week, often by dropping a fairway wood or hybrid to maintain options suited to firm links turf.
