Former NBA star Tony Parker has been appointed coach of France's Under-17 national basketball team. The 43-year-old Hall of Famer will lead the squad at the U17 World Cup in Turkey next year. Parker expressed excitement about returning to the court in a coaching role.
The French basketball federation announced on Friday that Tony Parker, a four-time NBA champion, will begin his coaching career at the helm of the country's Under-17 team. Parker, who won titles with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014, steps into this role after a distinguished playing career that included 181 appearances for France, culminating in a EuroBasket victory in 2013.
Parker shared his motivations in an interview with L’Equipe newspaper, stating, “I’ve been thinking about coaching for two years now, telling myself it’s the next step for me. I miss being on the court, the adrenaline, the challenge.” He added, “That’s why I decided to get my coaching licenses.”
This appointment marks a significant transition for the retired guard, recognized as a Hall of Famer, as he prepares the young French talent for international competition. The U17 World Cup in Turkey represents Parker's first major challenge in his new capacity, building on his deep ties to French basketball.
