President Donald Trump posted messages on Truth Social criticizing recent primary victories by several candidates in New York. The winners include Claire Valdez, Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Brad Lander, who are backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
The candidates won Democratic primaries for U.S. House seats earlier in the week. Chevalier and Lander defeated sitting Democratic incumbents.
Trump wrote on Thursday that "The Communists are finally making their move" and added that "America the Beautiful will NEVER be a Communist Country!!!" He described the ideology as one that has "not worked once."
Chevalier, when asked about being labeled a communist during an interview with MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi, declined to engage directly with the term. She said the focus should remain on presenting a positive vision for affordability.
The candidates have advocated policies including rent freezes, higher taxes on higher earners, and expanded universal healthcare. Valdez has also called for abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
