Amazon to end support for Kindles released in 2012 or earlier

Amazon will stop support for Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets from 2012 or earlier starting May 20, preventing users from buying, borrowing or downloading new books. Owners can still read previously downloaded content, but deregistering or factory resetting the devices will render them unusable. The company is offering discounts to encourage upgrades.
Amazon is exploring replaceable batteries for its upcoming Kindle models. The move comes as the company phases out support for older e-readers. It remains unclear if the change will satisfy users of legacy devices.

Amazon announced a software update for its Kindle Colorsoft and Scribe Colorsoft devices, introducing dark mode and enhanced drawing tools. The update allows users to toggle dark mode for specific menus, such as libraries or notebooks. It began rolling out on April 28, 2026.
