6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes off Iwate coast

A magnitude-6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture early Sunday, shaking parts of northeastern Japan including Aomori Prefecture.

The quake hit at 7:25 a.m. local time with a depth of about 40 kilometers, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. It registered a lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture. No tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

This event follows a 7.2 magnitude quake on Thursday in the same region, which had its magnitude revised upward from a preliminary estimate, and a 5.6 magnitude quake on Friday in Yamanashi Prefecture. The agency has warned that additional quakes may follow.

The recent series of temblors during typhoon season has raised concerns about potential mudslides in the affected areas.
