Asuka-Fujiwara ancient capitals recommended for UNESCO World Heritage List

A UNESCO advisory panel has recommended adding the Asuka-Fujiwara archaeological sites in western Japan to the World Cultural Heritage List.

The recommendation was issued on June 6, 2026. The sites are located in the Nara region and represent ancient capitals. The panel's decision follows evaluations of the archaeological value of the locations. If approved, the sites would gain international recognition under UNESCO guidelines.

UNESCO officials visited South Korea last week to review preparations for the World Heritage Committee meeting in Busan. A four-member team inspected the BEXCO convention center and nearby accommodations, according to the Korea Heritage Service. The visit precedes the 48th session scheduled for July 19-29.
