Capitals acquire defenseman Timothy Liljegren from Sharks

The Washington Capitals have acquired defenseman Timothy Liljegren from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The pick originally belongs to the Vegas Golden Knights. Liljegren, a 26-year-old from Kristianstad, Sweden, has recorded 11 points in 43 games this season.

The Sharks acquired Liljegren from the Toronto Maple Leafs on October 30, 2024. Over the past two seasons with San Jose, he has amassed 28 points, including seven goals and 21 assists, in 110 games. In his NHL career, spanning 307 games with the Sharks and Maple Leafs, Liljegren has 93 points (21 goals, 72 assists) while averaging 18:14 of ice time per game. Originally drafted by Toronto in the first round, 17th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound player also has experience in the American Hockey League, where he recorded 74 points (11 goals, 63 assists) in 150 games and won the Calder Cup with the Toronto Marlies in 2018.

Internationally, Liljegren has represented Sweden at the 2016 and 2017 IIHF U18 World Championships, the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship, and the 2023 IIHF World Championship. He earned silver medals with Sweden in 2016 and 2018.
