Experts respond to prosecutor's criticism in Knutby case

Prosecutor Elin Blank dismisses Aftonbladet's investigation into flaws in the 2004 Knutby probe and states she will not seek a retrial. Experts Sonny Björk and Anders Eriksson counter her response, calling it excuses. Reactions in Knutby to the new information are divided.

On November 25, 2025, Aftonbladet's 200 sekunder published an investigation highlighting flaws in the 2004 Knutby murder probe. It questions whether babysitter Sara Svensson truly killed pastor Helge Fossmo's wife, citing evidence of additional shots, conflicting shot angles, and blood traces.

Prosecutor Elin Blank, who led the case, dismisses the revelations in a press release. "All information was presented in the courts and is nothing new," she writes. She will not request a retrial.

Kriminal technician Sonny Björk and forensic pathologist Anders Eriksson respond point by point to her statements. Eriksson says: "I believe it's a human reaction when it's shown that one has done a poor investigation. It's superficial analyses and excuses, and she talks beside what's established."

Björk points out errors in Blank's description of bedsheet damage: "The damages do not correlate. There are no through-shot damages through the bedsheet." He notes that only three holes were reported in the preliminary investigation, while more were found later, without soot or blood back-spray as expected.

Regarding the blood pooling, Eriksson asserts that the blood could not have run through the mattress in such a short time. On bleeding at the hip wound, he states: "Having a blood effusion in the bullet channel proves nothing... If there is no circulation, one is dead."

In Knutby, the community outside Uppsala long associated with the case, opinions on the renewed attention are divided. The 2004 incident drew scrutiny to the Filadelfia congregation. Helge Fossmo was conditionally released in 2022, while Sara Svensson was freed in 2011 after psychiatric care.

Fossmo was sentenced to life imprisonment for instigating the murder and attempted murder.
